The Honda Battle of the Bands Showcase Invitational is an epic day-long event. Throughout the year, HBCU marching bands compete in order to make it to this final performance: this showcase is all about celebrating the winners. Honda has a number of initiatives supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); we’ve worked with Honda on Battle of the Bands and the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge.

Preparation & Knowing When to Bring in Extra Help

Our job was to capture the excitement, pride, and energy of the bands and crowds. In addition to a one-minute highlight video, we were tasked with creating short verticals spotlighting each school’s performance for use on social media platforms. With eight bands and over 60,000 attendees, we knew we’d have to be quick-footed on the field in order to capture as much compelling footage as possible. We also knew we’d need extra hands on deck.

In order to most effectively cover movement on the football field, we researched and hired two local cinematographers. We attended pre-event practices and collaborated intensely with the hired team to get a sense of band choreography and best vantage points.

After a full day of shooting, we began editing and pulling footage immediately. It was imperative to have the final video done the same week as the event in order to capitalize on its buzz. The social spots were very well received on social media.
